Dolly Parton, Loretta Lynn, and Tammy Wynette - the brass, sass, and class of country music - are together in a room talking about their first joint album. "Loretta: 'Dolly, tell 'em what you wanted to call it." 'Hot Flashes,' squeals Dolly, sending the three into a paroxysm of one-liners." Dolly knows her market. Millions of American women will be sweating in the "jaws of menopause" in the next 20 years. Even though I am an eternal optimist, I too am locked into those jaws. Knowing what to expect, what symptoms to look for, and how to manage menopause will assure that we sail more smoothly through the rough seas of "the change".
Webster defines jaws as, "either of two movable parts that grasp or crush something, as in a vise." I refuse to be crushed! I refuse to think of this normal process as the end of my youth, the end of dynamite pleasurable sex, or the end of looking good or feeling good. My personal health for 50 years has been excellent. But the first time I experienced heart palpitations, I panicked! My mind screamed, "Heart attack!"
(Menopause: the time in a woman's life when the cyclic function of the ovaries and menstrual periods cease. Menopause actually occurs at the end of a woman's last menstrual period, or when a woman has had no periods for at least 12 months. The average age at which menopause occurs is about 50 years, but menopause may occur normally in women as young as 40.)
Then I started sweating. I diagnosed myself as having an infection somewhere in my body. Gaining weight made me feel guilty for eating too much of the wrong foods! (Common Symptoms include but are not limited to: Hot Flashes, Night Sweats, Vaginal Dryness, Urinary Incontinence, Sagging Breasts, Hair Changes, Mood Changes, Depression, Anxiety, Irritability, Memory Loss, Diminished Self-Esteem, Aging Skin and Lack of Libido.)
These symptoms continued, and new ones appeared. When these signs of aging appeared, dislodging my feelings of youthfulness, and drowning me with fear, I searched for knowledge of menopause. In Menopause and Midlife, the authors write, "Menopause and midlife work in tandem. We might think of menopause as a woman's internal, physical upheaval and midlife as her external, emotional upheaval." I began to understand the changes within my body, and to accept them as part and parcel of the midlife package, not a sentence to a useless existence. This was not an instantaneous acceptance, however, when my symptoms pointed toward a hysterectomy. (Common Disease affiliation include Osteoporosis and Heart Disease.)
Imprisoned by four sterile walls, I held on to my husband's warm kiss before he left the hospital. I blinked back tears. Fear clogged my throat. I was afraid that I would lose my femininity with my hysterectomy - that I would no longer feel or look attractive. I feared that much of the meaning I derived from life as a woman and nurturer - a life-giver - would disappear with a slash of the scalpel. The next morning, my favorite lingerie would be traded for a surgical gown. And the feminine fragrance I wore would be replaced with the odor of the operating room and medication.

But my mood changed from gloom to joy when I remembered that I was not alone in that immaculate hospital room. I had an intimate relationship with Jesus Christ. His peace filled my heart. As I prayed I could feel Him take some of the fear and replace it with hope. I knew in my heart that He would be with me in this time of need.
God is not some mystical, impersonal power somewhere out in the universe. He's my best friend, Savior, and Lord. I am learning to trust Him completely. Being closely connected with God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit gave me courage to face major surgery with less fear. Now I'm completely healthy, but without God the anguish of surgery would have left scars. Today, as I encounter a new or different problem with aging, I know that Jesus Christ guides me through successful aging.
TOP TEN PERI-MENOPAUSE / MENOPAUSE STRATEGIES: 1. Be tenacious. This is your life and your body. Ask questions. Keep asking until you get answers that work. 2. Surround yourself with supportive people. 3. Slim down your calendar of commitments. Big transitions drain emotional and physical energy. Plan to take care of yourself during this time. 4. Know your family history: cancer, heart disease, your mother's age at the onset of menopause. 5. If you are married, talk with your husband about the emotional and physical changes you are experiencing. Bring him with you to the doctor. 6. Figure out together what you can do physically (exercise, diet, reducing stress) to make this passage easier. 7. Find a compassionate doctor who will work with you and your treatment options to make the most of menopause. Get an estrogen-level blood test, and bone density test. 8. Face your concerns about aging and specifically menopause. 9. List the advantages of menopause. (It's a challenge, but do it anyway.) 10. Learn the symptoms of (peri) menopause.

The Key to Your Metabolism
The key to a fitter, healthier you lies in your metabolism and how clean your internal body is. Metabolism is a biochemical process that governs how quickly you turn calories into energy. You use energy and burn fat when you are doing physical activity and digesting food, but you also continue to burn fat even while you are at rest. The rate at which you burn fat when you are resting is called your basal metabolic rate (BMR) . There are actually ways to speed it up so that you can burn fat faster even when you’re not doing much. Every coin has two sides, and the flipside of speeding up your metabolism is slowing it down. You might be doing things that slow down your metabolism and allow your body to store excess fat without even realizing it. Some of the things that slow your metabolism down are:
...Eating Poorly – Quit the sodas and snack cakes! Treats are fine; just make them organic,healthy, natural foods. Avoid high processed fat foods.
...Not Enough Sleep – If your body is exhausted then the efficiency with which it burns calories goes down the toilet. A well rested body is more efficient.

It doesn’t matter whether you cycle, swim, walk or jog, but do something to get yourself moving. A regular exercise routine is best, but remember to make slight changes to it once in awhile so your body doesn’t reach a plateau and stop improving. Ten minutes out of your busy day may not seem like a lot when you’re first starting out, but if you exercise for 10 minutes, six days this week, that’s an hour more workout that you did last week! As you and your family get used to your routine it will become easier and easier to increase 10 minutes to 12, 15 and 20 minutes per day. I recommend re-bounding. It is easy safe and very effective.

Bulk up & Tone up!
If you work on building up some lean muscle mass with weight training then you are guaranteed to burn more calories than just by doing cardio alone. Why? Because muscle burns calories for you even when you’re at rest-it raises your BMR to help you burn fat!

Do Intervals.
When you do interval training, for example if you jog for 12 minutes total, but every 2 minutes you increase your speed to a hard run for 1 minute, your body is working a lot harder, so you get a more intense workout.

Get Up!
Stand up from your desk and walk around the office, go up and down the stairs a few times, park farther away or play with the dog. If you use these little bursts of energy throughout the day then your metabolism will stay revved up and you’ll keep burning more calories.

I’ve given you some tips and tricks to help boost your metabolism without even mentioning the easiest of all things you can do-eat! When you wake up in the morning your body is in starvation mode because you’ve been fasting, but when you eat breakfast you boost your metabolism so that you start burning calories earlier, thereby burning more total calories through the day. What you eat and how often has a large impact on your metabolic rate.
